GEOG101A/101B Exercise: Asset Mapping Using the Online UVic Green Map

Synopsis: Students will work in teams to add sites to version 2 of the On-line UVic Community Green Map. Each term, a new theme will be added (suggested by other university departments and offices).




Possible Course: 101B and/or 101A




Learning Outcomes: (1) Students will become comfortable with basic web-mapping skills. (2) They will contribute to a campus-wide participatory planning process - asset mapping







Possible New Map Layers:

  • Campus art
  • Donor and named sites
  • First Peoples sites
  • Significant Trees
  • Sustainability Sites
  • ...

Suggested Instructions


  1. Instructor should contact Ken Josephson and Maeve Lydon to discuss what layers could be added to the web-map that term. For this example, let's assume work with
  2. Instructor contacts the UVic Green Map coordinator (info@mapping.uvic.ca) and requests a new layer be added
  3. TAs work with class to come up with new icons. Students discuss icons design ideas and choose their favorite.
  4. Students are given task (instruction sheet) of taking picture of the asset, adding site to map, uploading picture and adding text
  5. Students take screen-grab of site on map and had this in as their assignment
